Occupation: Author and Educator

Location: Washington D.C., United States

The Sex In My Business: I write about black women's sexuality and teach people how to cultivate intimate relationships with themselves and their bodies. I also run a Facebook group, which I started as a safe place for black women and femmes to ask questions, share their journeys of exploration with their bodies and sexuality, and build a supportive community.

A Typical Day: My days are typically spent answering emails, creating content for social media and my Facebook group, reading, researching, and writing. I use social media to keep abreast of the conversations and questions people have to determine which topics are most in need of better resources. When I create social media content, my aim is to dispel the myths that can make people feel insecure about their bodies and/or sexuality.

The Best Part: My favorite part of this job is hearing from people how much my book Pussy Prayers: Sacred and Sensual Rituals for Wild Women of Color (2018) and other work has impacted the way they prioritize and pursue pleasure, and how I have made the most secret parts of them feel seen.

The Worst Part: I really don’t like dealing with people (typically via email and social media) who approach me sexually because of the content I produce.

How I Got Here: I studied education in college and even considered becoming a certified sex educator, but I didn’t realize how vast the sexuality sector could be with the Internet and social media. When I started writing blog posts to explore topics that were arising in group chats with friends, I didn’t consider myself part of the sexuality space. But the more my work resonated with people, the more I realized the need for accessible sexuality and sensuality education for adults outside of a classroom.

What Society Thinks: Most people I engage with view my work as brave and intriguing, probably because it is not something they would ever do themselves. I appreciate that people think I'm brave. Fortunately (aside from the unsolicited sexual advances), I haven't had any particularly negative experiences.

When I’m Not At Work: When I’m not working, I like to watch something funny or educational. I also enjoy reading for pleasure.
